What inspired the launch of the Universal Badminton Federation?
The Universal Badminton Federation (UBF) was inspired by a vision to empower youth and communities through badminton. The founders recognized that many young people, especially in underrepresented or rural communities, lack access to quality training, mentorship, and competitive opportunities in sports. UBF was created as a platform to bridge this gap and unlock potential using badminton as a transformative tool.
What makes UBF different from other sports development programs?
UBF stands out for its grassroots-first approach, focus on inclusivity, and global vision rooted in local action. Unlike many programs that target elite athletes only, UBF invests in the entire pipeline—from discovering raw talent in rural schools to preparing players for international competitions. Our structured governance model, transparency, and commitment to equity make us both people-driven and professionally run.
What specific gap or need does UBF aim to fill?
UBF aims to address the lack of structured support for badminton at the grassroots level, particularly for underprivileged and rural youth. It seeks to create a fair and inclusive pathway from community-level engagement to international competition. By training local coaches, organizing talent camps, and facilitating access to equipment and mentorship, UBF provides the infrastructure needed for talent to grow where opportunities were previously limited..
Can you walk us through the vision and mission in your own words?
Certainly. Our vision is to build a world where every child—regardless of their background—can dream of becoming a badminton star, starting from their community courts to global arenas.
Our mission is to empower youth through access to training, mentorship, and competitive platforms while nurturing values like discipline, unity, and sportsmanship. We focus on communities that need the most support, especially where sports development is often overlooked.
How important is inclusivity and equity in your model?
Inclusivity is one of UBF’s core values. We are committed to offering equal opportunities regardless of race, gender, or ability. Our programs are designed to be accessible to marginalized and rural communities. We also ensure representation in our leadership and volunteer network and aim to make badminton a tool for social cohesion and community pride.
How do you plan to identify and nurture young talent at the grassroots level?
UBF will work through regional chapters and school partnerships to identify talent early. Local coaches and trainers will be trained to spot and support promising players. Talent camps, community tournaments, and mentorship programs will provide structured development. We also aim to offer equipment and scholarships to remove economic barriers for participation.
Do you have a development plan specifically for Masters, particularly for women and veterans?
Yes. While our primary focus is youth, we acknowledge the importance of lifelong participation in sport. UBF plans to include Masters development programs as part of its broader engagement strategy, including events and leagues tailored for women and veterans. These programs will promote fitness, competition, and intergenerational community spirit.
What are your goals for the first year of UBF?
In the first year, our key goals include:
- Establishing foundational governance and executive structures
- Launching pilot grassroots programs in targeted regions
- Building partnerships with schools, local coaches, and donors
- Organizing at least one community tournament or training camp
- Beginning volunteer recruitment and ambassador engagemen
- Ensuring operational transparency and legal compliance
Do you plan to host international tournaments in the future?
Yes, hosting international tournaments is a part of UBF’s long-term strategy. We envision cross-border events, cultural exchanges, and diaspora-led tournaments that give players global exposure and unify communities through sport.
How is your organization structured?
UBF operates through a two-tier governance model:
- The Board of Directors (General Council) sets strategic direction and policy. It includes roles like President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and several directors with specific portfolios (e.g., development, governance, sponsorship).
- The Executive Team manages daily operations and program delivery globally. It includes the CEO, Programs Director, Development Director, and others
- We also have regional chapters, volunteers, and optional advisory councils to enhance local engagement and expert guidance.
How are you planning to raise funds for your activities?
UBF will raise funds through a combination of donations, grants, sponsorships, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. All donations will be managed transparently under dual-authority banking, and financial statements will be reviewed annually and presented at our AGM. Donors may also earmark funds for specific programs, provided they align with our mission.
